Thriller my eye! White Male Character Study

This is a philosophical statement about becoming what you fear most. That idea I guess has some merit. I find that the marketing of the film was totally and absolutely a complete lie. For a "thriller" to be a "thriller" there has to be protagonists and antagonists. In this case, there is one main character who has a mental break. There are no two sides to this story. Similar themes have been done in other movies where the white man just gets fed up and goes nuts. There was that Michael Douglas film where he just gets out of his car on the 405, gets a gun, and well you know the rest. There were similar themes in Fight Club, although a lot more was going on in that story.
At least it had some good nudity in it, but that alone is not enough to redeem it. The film basically centers on the fact that every straight white man's greatest fear is to end up in jail takin' it from some huge black stud. I bet on a family fued survey, if you asked the straight white guy, that would probably make the top ten. There really was no "mystery" to the film. I wish it had not been touted as such. Mamet's wife has aged and I didn't expect that. I saw her last in Mamet's film with Steve Martin. I would skip this. There is really not much redeeming about it other than Macy's performance. That had to be a difficult role to pull off--especially some of the prison scenes. I think I am putting Mamet if not on my black list, my grey list. |
