I thought that the trailer for "Edmond" was one of the best that I had seen in a while. It had William H. Macy, who I thought was terrific in "Fargo" and "The Cooler, in the lead role. It was written and directed by David Mamet, who always has good dialogue such as in "Homicide" and "The Spartan." And it costars Rebecca Pidgeon, who I thought was great in "The Winslow Boy." My expectations were high.

The openning is great with Macy saying nothing and visiting a fortune teller and arguing with his wife. We have good acting and crisp writing up to this point, and I am quite pleased. And, then......Macy meets Joe Mantegna in a bar and the movie decides to take on the topic of race, which I did not see coming and really quite shocked me. I think the movie could have been better if it had not taken this route. It could have focused on a man disconnecting from society without bringing in the topic of race.

But, the dialogue is still pretty good and the conversation with Mantegna is interesting. Denise Richards has a great cameo in a strip club, and Bai Ling has a great scene in a peek show. I would say we are over half way through the movie, and then Macy meets Julia Stiles, and that is when the movie lost me. I felt that Macy's character went way too far over the edge, and it did not interest me what happened after that.

I expected much more from this story. I thought Macy was fine. I found it kind of funny that he kept being thwarted by disagreements over money. The supporting roles were pretty good. But, the movie did not deliver what I hoped.
