Gross medical inaccuracies

I want to preface this by saying that I am typically able to suspend my disbelief without problem. Rarely, though, I have to call shenanigans.
As an anesthesiologist, I went to this movie knowing that I would be fielding questions from my patients regarding awareness after seeing the movie. I figured I needed to do my own research so I could see where their questions would be coming from.
I cannot overstate how incredibly inaccurate the movie is from a medical standpoint. I stayed to check the credits and yes, sure enough, they did indeed have a medical production consultant on staff; I can only wonder what sort of input the guy had.
I'm used to seeing gross medical inaccuracies on TV and film, but for a film that rolls medical statistics before the film, I feel that they might have some responsibility to show a somewhat plausible case of awareness.
The anesthesiologist is drunk, uses only two drugs during a four-hour heart transplant, doesn't tape the endotracheal tube, places no invasive monitors, and leaves the room for a while before the patient is on bypass (and where are the circulating nurses and perfusionist?) -- this is only a start.
The story has a few decent twists, so it could have been a decent movie. I wish I had been asked to be the medical consultant; I could have showed the same story with some believability.
I had been worried that I would be asked questions daily about awareness due to the newly released movie. So my one saving grace is that the movie is so bad that maybe only a handful of my patients will see it. |
