Since I don't often get to spend much time with my 2 nephews, 11 and 15 years old, I treated them to a movie and dinner. I received an education on Alex Rider: Stormbreaker, a movie adaptation of the first of a series of novels by Anthony Horowitz. About a 14-year old young man, along the likes of a young James Bond, Alex discovers who his now-dead banker uncle really was.
I anticipated it would be a little inane -- along the lines of Spy Kid. Instead, I was pleasantly suprised by the intelligence and design of the film. Made solely for entertainment purposes, I couldn't help but compare it to Mission Impossible and found this one to be oh so much better.
With an impeccable supporting cast (Mickey O'Rourke is astoundingly hideous as the villian -- what a creepy guy), we see the likes of Ewan McGregor, Robbie Coltrane, Stephen Fry, Bill Nighy, Sophie Okonedo, Missy Pyle and Alicia Silverstone backing up newcomer Alex Pettyfer.
Ok, Alex is a little on the beautiful side -- just a tad too goodlooking. But he brings a believable youthfulness and energy to his stunts that were always missing with Tom Cruise. Alex looks like he can really ride a bike that fast, run that fast and actually may have a black belt.
And the action keeps on grinding and grinding; one heartbeat after another. Not enough to give you cardiac arrest -- just a steady stream of movement so that my squirmy little 11-year old nephew was actually on the edge of his seat! If a movie can hold his attention, I know its good.
Go ahead, take your nephew or niece if you need an excuse to walk into this very entertaining action film. |
