I don't get the disparity..

The audience (yahoo reviewers) as of the time of this posting have given this movie a D+, which seems to be mostly Fs with a few A's pulling it up a little. Meanwhile, the critics *love* this movie. I just don't understand how this one can be love/hate.

This movie made me do two things I have never done before in my life: 1. write a review and 2. walk out before the movie is over. I have always found something redeeming about every movie I have ever watched, until this one. I have always seen every movie in a theater through to conclusion, even if I thought it was mediocre or not so good. But this movie was not so deserving.

It started out fine, with thorough character development and what seemed to be a great setup for a horror or thriller: a single woman, a crappy motel room in the middle of nowhere, a creepy drifter spending the night. The acting was very good. All the dominoes were in place, and then the movie's fatal flaw was revealed: NOTHING HAPPENS! Another hour goes by and absolutely *nothing* happens. Two people's mental illness gets progressively worse, all while still in the hotel room. There were a few chuckles at the character's wild reactions to the imaginary bugs, which I personally found far more sad than funny, but otherwise the audience mostly looked around in boredom, checked their phone messages, and wished for their money back.

I am normally an extremely calm and easygoing person. After more than an hour and a half into the film (including the previews), I could barely restrain myself from standing up and shouting at the screen "For the love of god, let *something* happen!" Instead, for the first time in my life, I decided that no matter how brilliant the ending could possibly be, it was not worth sitting through another minute of this movie. I walked out.

Some "A" reviewers have posted that they felt that the rest of us "don't get it." This is not so. I'm sure most everyone who watched the movie understood what it was about. But I can guarantee, most of us did not go to the movies to see this. This movie would be fine at maybe the artsy movie houses or a film professors' convention or as a cure for insomnia. But for the vast majority of the moviegoing public, who likes to watch movies where STUFF HAPPENS, this movie should never have been released. Please, I urge you, save the ten dollars and the two hours of your life.
