Without a doubt one of the most disturbing, gut wrenching films I have ever viewed in my entire life.
This film ranks up there with Polanski's "Repulsion" and "The Tenant", and surpasses "Frailty".....
First of all....this film is doomed to bomb...there is NO WAY you release this 1.) against POC:At World's End and a week removed from Shrek 3 AND 2.) For sure with this strong subject matter and 3.) Under false ads....
The film company is selling this as a horror film in the traditional sense....people are walking out in droves pissed off because there are no "bugs" in the sense of critters crawling all over you and taking control of you or whatever...I think people were expecting some sort of "Body Snatcher" type deal.....and it is so far removed from that it's not even funny.
The average Yahoo user is giving it a D-....down from a C- just a few hours ago...so it's safe to say this will tank and do so BADLY!
That being said....if you read this or any other HONEST review....you will NOT be dissapointed!
First of all....there is noway I can give a decent account of what the film entails without giving the whole thing away....so I will do the best I can.
This film is based on a play....there are only 2 main actors in it....and it mostly takes place in one location, a small apartment....I think this aspect aggrivates viewers not used to stage productions....
Also....the acting by Judd and newcomer Michael Shannon (this is his first screen role, the rest has been stage productions) is so impressive....it will be a total SHAME if they are not at the very least nominated come Academy time.....granted the AAs for the most part shun horror films.....but again, this is not your typical horror film....so hopefully they will keep this in mind. As Roger Ebert said....this material may not be Shakespere.....but the complexity of the lines that the two main players have to deliver (for sure near the end) are none the less impressive.
This film made me squirm in my seat....I caught myself grimicing and shaking my head at what I was viewing....my mouth open and all....ANY film that can get that strong of a reaction out of me....is somethng else....for sure considering I'm pretty jaded when it comes to "horror".....
Director William Friedkin is best known for his work on the Original Exorcist (yet another aspect that the ads misuse).....IMHO....this film surpasses that film by miles.
With the Exorcist Friedkin was working with an entire novel, you have a larger cast of players and more locations....with this film, he has to pull off the impossible....2 people and 1 room for the most part....
As to be expected....with today's younger crowd...that's asking the impossible....2 couples came in about 10 minutes late....as soon as I saw them....I KNEW the material would be too complex..and they would leave....and after a few "what the"...and "oh my"s.....they left...
It's been about an hour and a half since I saw the film...and it's still in my mind, and that really is saying something....
If you are an open minded film viewer GO SEE THIS FILM! |
