As someone who actually participated in the tournament, I was quite skeptical that you can capture the spirit of the cruciverbal subculture. The director does an excellent job of inserting the watcher into the world of crossword puzzles, while injecting doses of humor and wit. The weaving of the puzzle tournament with the interviews with celebs (e.g., Jon Stewart, Bill Clinton, etc.) keeps the movie along. At an hour and half, it's difficult to keep the moviewatcher transfixed, and in this regard the director doesn't fully succeed (although I felt it was a little slow at only a few points). However, he does fully capture the joy and simplicity of a crossword puzzle, and at the same time leaving you feeling good. |
