Edward Norton's Harlan is a deeply troubled yet forgiveable character that is well played and intensely intersting. Norton is truly one of this generation's most gifted actors. The performances are strong throughout, including David Morse as Wade, the lonely father trying to hold onto his kids through a life slipping away. The surreal western fantasy develops quite interstingly actually and, while it makes a fascinating backdrop for the film's climax, it also distracts the audience a bit from the neccessary confrontation between Wade and Harlan. It does create a unique OK Coral style gunfight set against a developing (and unfortunate) California suberb, which shows the old west really only lives on in our minds. This film is quite thought provoking and as I write this I am already liking it more as I think about it. I started at a B- and am finishing with a B+. |
