Good, but the CG deserves more...

As an active duty officer in the Coast Guard with 18 years of service, I can testify that the movie isn't overly authentic. With that said, I found it to be very moving. I'm not sure if it moved me because of my love of the Coast Guard or because of the decent drama and acting. I suspect it's a combination of the two. The visuals were absolutely stunning. I've been at sea in the Bering and I can tell you, it's not much different than you see in the movie. I was stationed in Kodiak for 6 years, so the wonderful (and completely authentic) backdrops made me pine for the great land. All in all, it was a good movie. Kevin Costner made a comment during the movie that is very true: "People don't appreciate the Coast Guard until they need the Coast Guard." Maybe the movie will at least serve to help people appreciate us just a little bit more. |
