The films should of been reversed and Quentin needed to drop the smug verbage that went on way to long. Tarantino's ego thought his writing could carry the first 60 minutes of Death Proof. Wrong! Painful. The women were uninteresting and Kurt Russell was wasted. They must of mentioned the film Vanishing Point three times! I quess he forgot to re-watch that film. It is vastly superior in tone, theme, pacing and stunts. Why in the hell was he trying to do the strong female thing when he covered that in Kill Bill 1&2? They would of burnt up the projection booth in the 70's. 3 more kills, some nudity, and 20 minutes less dialogue could of saved this mess.
Planet Terror on the other hand was flawlesss. Chop full of great little details. I loved the bits about Jeff Fahey's BBQ and Naveen Andrews' ball sack collection. The look was so authentic to one of those Lucio Fulci Italian zombie films of the late 70's - early 80's. There were some seriously disturbing moments. He nailed it.
Rodriquez also had the best trailer. The second best was "Don't". That one had me laughing for awhile. Sadly, Rob Zombies was pretty lame. |
