What could have been a surprisingly side-splitting idea, especially for Guest, turns into an appallingly humorless cavalcade of lukewarm and unsurprising performances. So predictable in spots, it looks like the cutting room floor became the movie. We know the actors can do it as they have in all of Guest's other works. Wha' hoppened? We almost didn't need to see ANY of the movie within the movie. Cheap shots like names (Hack, Pisher, Kuntz) and funny makeup do not a Guest masterpiece make. I really wonder if the suits DID get hold of this one. Someone should have put a foot down, and tried not to step in it. |
