We've seen this story enough times now, that even for those of you that aren't from NY, you might feel like you at least spent a summer there somewhere along the line. Dito Monteil does a nice job showing us the suffocating edginess that goes with growing up in NYC. He also goes a bit too far, showing us almost no softness or humor to temper the insanity and violence of the street. The result is a test of patience and the movie go-er's quest to see this film push it's way over the edge of mediocrity. Neither of which is ultimately rewarded. Robert Downey, Jr. is seriously mis-cast as Dito, and is the most serious of several casting blunders (sans Chaz Palmetieri who easily rises above this crowd). A nice first-timer's effort, but wholly unsatisfying and mostly pointless. |
