This is a very mediocre film version of a famous musical. At times it's so by-the-numbers it's cringe-worthy. It has a very made-for TV quality that it never shakes. The music is surprisingly bland. The film takes place over one of the most exciting periods of time in music and yet the music in this is very limited. It never expands past Broadway bombast to represent the music of the time. The acting is all over the map. Knowles is zombie-like (except when she's singing)and Foxx is flat out bad and it's not because his character is less than noble, the guy looks like he was in pain as an actor and brings nothing to the role. It's an embarrassing performance. Murphy is great and I hope this elevates him to greater roles. He is a much better actor that his comedic roles have so far proven. Jennifer Hudson is fantastic. Not only does she deliver on every level but she defines just how great this movie should have been. She will justly rewarded for this and hopefully we'll see her act more as she's just as good an actress as she is a singer. The photography is obvious and uninspired. The movie keeps you marginally entertained but, except Hudson and Murphy, is not at all exceptional. |
