You, Me and Dupree stars Owen Wilson as Randolp Dupree, a likeable loser who loses his job, apartment and car in order to go to his best friend's wedding. His friend, Carl, played by Matt Dillon, feels somewhat responsible and with much resistance from his new wife Molly, Kate Hudson who is the best one in the cast, Dupree moves in with them, for what Carl tells Molly will only be a couple of days.
And of course it's not. Dupree immediatly starts to be an invasive house guest. He starts by changing the answering machine, he orders HBO, clogs the toilets, sleeps in the nude, invites friends over to watch football and in what is the final straw, invites his date over and sets the house on fire. This half of You, Me and Dupree is pretty much the funniest part. Most of my lifes were contained in this little portion of the film. Mind you there weren't that many laughs, but when there were they were mostly here.
Then the film switches gears, some stuff happens taht I'm not gunna give away, and then Molly begins to fall for Dupree. Dupree takes up cycling too. But back to Molly and Dupree. Molly begins to learn more about Dupree, and she defends him infront of Carl. She even begins to call him Randolf. This part of You, Me and Dupree is considerably less funny. Still some mild chuckles though. But we do get to see more of Kate Hudson, which is great becuase she is the most charming and charaismatic perfomer in the cast.
THEN the film changes again. Carl who is now so angry at Dupree for getting close to Molly starts a wee bit of a fight over a lovely low-carb dinner which Dupree has prepared. Molly kicks Carl out and the rest of the film we are left with emotional confrontations bewteen characters which seem slightly akward, and we then must see how Carl will win Molly back over. This portion of the film is funny, yes. I had several laughs.
AND in a completely unrelated but parallel story to the film we watch how Carl feels about Molly's father. And what goes on between them at work. This not so funny. Only kind of.
So I've pretty much ruined a lot of the movie for you. I'm sorry. But the point I was trying to get across was that You, Me and Dupree is just trying to be too many movies at the same time. And for the most part it fails at whatever it tries to be. It's not a very sweet romantic comedy. It's not a very touching or heartfelt drama. It's not deep study in friendship. It's not a hillarious comedy. It's just a very average and mediocre film. But I am going to recommend that you see You, Me and Dupree if you enjoy comedies, and can you use a good laugh now and then.
I will admit I did not want to see this movie. But there was nothing else playing at 1:20, so me and my friend saw it. I did laugh. But that's it. If this film's only mission is to arouse laughter no matter how weak, it succeded in that. There were a couple of smart and funny moments, and a very funny cameo by Lance Armstrong.
So basically, You, Me and Dupree is just an average film. It never really proved to me that it had a point of being in existence, except to try to be a hillarious comedy, which its not. But if you are looking for a summer comedy to satisfy you, and are looking in the way of last year's Wedding Crashers, then I recommend that you go see You, Me and Dupree. For the rest of us, there is really no reason to see this. In terms of analogies You, Me and Dupree is a big buffett, but we have already eaten. Oh that was a good one.
