So glad I took a chance on it!

I've had this movie on my list of DVDs that may be good to rent for quite some time. Independent films are a gamble it seems. You either get the artsy-quirky films that appeal to 1% of the population and rely on that quirkiness to carry them; the slow, drawn-out, pointless ones that try to be really deep but have no emotion, energy, or plot and leave you tired; or the stand-outs that shine and make you wonder, 'Why haven't I heard of this from anyone?"
This film is the latter. For once I was able to watch a film I truly enjoyed. It has a great story, interesting characters, beautiful locations with lots of detail, a lovely score, and wonderful performances. The casting of the two main characters was a perfect match. Trevor Morgan deftly goes toe-to-toe with a seasoned actor (who came out of retirement just for this film) and balances the relationship perfectly. This is the type of film the Academy SHOULD be awarding, but just like the running message of the film, what IS art and what is judged to be art are rarely the same. |
