A Disappointment

I went to this movie with high hopes, the previews looked interesting, and it has a good cast. However, upon seeing the movie I must profess myself to have been quite disappointed. The plot was horribly disjointed, we are given no introduction into what's going on at the beginning of the film, and threads that could have been interesting are left unanswered. The majority of the film consists of one liners and sophomoric pretention. What there is to the plot is formulaic and predictable.

I will say that the acting was actually superb, but when you're working from a script that is this bad, good acting simply cannot save the film.

I think my main problem with this film was that I went expecting to see an adult oriented well thought out plot, and instead saw a movie that must have been originally oriented towards five-year-olds.

Spoilers ahead: fairly warned be ye!

This movie was so slow and tedious that when the protagonists first launch ended in falure I almost cried. Not because of the sorrow of the moment but because I knew from the previews that he would have a successful launch and it meant that the movie wasn't over yet.

It is never truly explained why the government would have a problem with an ex-Air Force officer building a rocket, when there are large corporations even now attempting the same thing.

When he finally does get into orbit the evil government immediately attempts to cover it up . . . and nothing ever comes of it. It's like the director thought, "oops, we've run out of time, but we can't cut that part of the film to allow the ending to make more sense, that would just be silly." In fact it seems they had to leave it in because it was one more little bit of the government bashing that was the main attept at comic relief in the film.

My final impression is that this may be the worst adaptation of a book to film I have seen in my life. They made an attempt to cut it down to movie length, but no attept to smooth out the disjointed product of their butchery. In a way it's almost sad, If done correctly, this probably would have been a pretty decent movie.
