A vomit of ideas

In an interview on a recent podcast, Kelly stated that he referenced the book of Revelations, but found it so dense, he ended up getting the Revelations for Dummies. I'd have to add that he also must have gotten Karm Marx for Dummies, temporal theory for dummies and so on and so on. The film seems like a series of Cliff notes presenting ideas with no focus, awkward presentation and voiceover narration so painfully obvious in it's attemtps to tie all of these ideas together(Can you say Blade Runner?), that it proves to...just unwatchable.
Not generally surprising that Kelly falls under the same type of sophomore slump that many young first time directors suffer under after a taste of success. In my opinion, I think he should have done this film after two or three films, iron out the ideas and presented the film after he had more experience under his belt.
Let's hope he ends up learning from his mistakes and making a better film when he finishes off The Box with Cameron Diaz.(Please don't screw up, Richard Matheson, Richard. Please.) |
