I was both thoroughly entertained and thoroughly horrified by "Notes on a Scandal". It is unquestionably well done -- suspenseful, well acted, good character development. It also walks a fine line between character study and character assassignation. I'm not going to argue that women like Barbara and Sheba don't exist, but I do have to wonder why, in an industry that produces so few strong women's roles, these are the characters we get to see in films. Like "Fatal Attraction" this is a film that will likely be dissected in women's studies classes for some time. There is a subtext about women, and family, and lesbians, that is disturbingly misogynistic and homophobic. Given the quality of the project, I'm willing to extend the benefit of the doubt to the writer and director. I hope they deserve it. |
