Missed by the critics

This is a great movie that has been overlooked and/or misunderstood by the critics. True, this is an "action" movie, but it is actually much more than that. The themes about belonging and forgiveness were very moving, and the action/adventure scenes were excellent. Some critics have complained about the photography, but it was intentionally chaotic and kinetic. Those sorts of complaints remind me of people who complain about hand-held cameras -- it's a stylistic choice which may not appeal to everyone, but it's certainly not bad filmmaking. The acting was also commendable. There is very little dialogue and the characters come through in the eyes of the actors. Finally, it may not be the trend right now, but it was refreshing to see an action movie that is not full of wisecracks and populated by impossibly hot women. The main female character here is brave, honorable, graceful -- and beautiful in a non-Hollywood way. If the only acceptable template for your action movies is a wise-cracking Bruce Willis (admittedly, this is sort of a "Diehard with Vikings"), then you won't like Pathfinder. But, if you can sit still for something a little more serious, you'll be rewarded. |
