Great war scenes but rest of movie falls flat

Eastwood gets credit for pulling off the best war scenes since "Saving Private Ryan" but the States-side story was flat and uncompelling. Okay, sure, the famous picture was taken of a second hoisting, politicians took it as their queue to inspire disillusioned Americans and "fool" them into buying war bonds. But this portion of the movie should have taken up 20 minutes of the movie; instead it takes up two-thirds. I walked away believing that the movie about one of World War II's most important battles -- and the basis of its most iconic photograph -- wasn't a war movie or even an patriotic movie. Rather, and it pains me to say this, it was a chick flick and served largely as a pallate upon which Eastwood can make subtle politic comments. |
