Macabre but not melancholy and beautiful yet twisted without being demented. Tom Twyker conveys the sense and emotion of scent magically in a film format. The cinematography works so well to extract the essence of the emotion and the corresponding smells of the characters. From the deathly stench imbued into the impoverished fish market vendors, the creation of an apple tree from its constituent parts, the elitist aire of the bourguoise conveyed in their powdery faces and dusty wigs, and not to mention the piles and fields of roses and lavender.
This continues through the acting of Ben Whishaw and the amazing support of Hoffman and Rickman. This would not have been the same movie had Ben Whishaw not played the lead. Without much dialog, he exudes the emotion necessary to engage and move the relatively simple story of the pursuit to capture and preserve the essence of the scent of life.
