A wonderous hard film to sell

I am not the least surprised by the great mix of reviews coming out on this film.
When I saw it, I thought, Wow - this is a great achievement that will have a hell of a time finding an audience...
And just who is the audience for Perfume?
I believe that those who pride themselves on seeing and understanding truly visonary films by remarkable film-makers and the amazing, brave new works they are creating are the best audience for a film like this. A slasher flick for teens, this is not!
"Perfume" is way out there, to be sure. It's also Wild, funny, sarcastic, touching and scary. Above all though, it is beautiful and takes chances that very very very few films nowadays dare to do. For that alone it is to be commended and recommended
And yet, frankly, the less you know about it - the better.
Oh, except for one thing -- the climax of this film (along with a few other dark moments in it) are to be taken with a great big grain of salt. It is ment to be exactly what it is - a punchline - a great punchline, a joke -- which, when all is said and done, is what this absolutly terrific adult fable is .... a wonderously funny wink to those in the "nose"... |
