A Study in Scarlett

How is this young film actress different from all (or nearly all) other young film actresses? Film her in a fanciful or exotic setting, and she'll go with it wholeheartedly. Film her in too mundane or contemporary a setting, and she will just look out of place or uncomfortable. Since Sondra Pransky, Scarlett Johansson's character, is in nearly every scene, it looks as if Mr. Allen were trying to tailor a setting especially for her. He put her into shapeless wardrobe and granny glasses, making her remind of Mia Farrow. But Ms. Johansson lacks the comic timing of Ms. Farrow, Diane Keaton, Louise Lasser, etc. Perhaps putting such a quintessential white-bread type in the role of a Jewish chick from Brooklyn was meant as a comic conceit. Mr. Allen, himself, participates as, Sid "Splendini" Waterman, a variation of the nebbish character he has played down through the years. (He drops a pretty strong hint that he means this to be the last time around, for that character.) There is constant gentle--alas, only mildly funny--play with elements of films of yesteryear and shtick from long before films. Nothing in "Scoop" ends as it would have in the old days. Perhaps one must be relatively old to "get" this film. I was hoping for more.
