Surprisingly good

Sondra Pransky (Johansson), a student journalist, is visiting with friends in London. While at a stage performance, she is called on by magician, Sid Waterman (Allen) (aka "Splendini") to assist in a trick in which she will enter a box and dematerialize. To her surprise, while in the box she is able to see and hear the ghost of the prominent and recently deceased journalist, Joe Strombel (Mc Shane), who has escaped death just long enough to come back and give her the "scoop." The scoop is: Peter Lyman (Jackman), son of a lord, is the "Tarot Card Serial Killer."
The remainder of the film features Sondra and Sid, acting as a father and daughter from America, on the case to determine if Peter is in fact the "Tarot Card Serial Killer." If Joe is right, this could be the story of Sondra's career.
In almost every review the critics are drawing a comparison between Scoop and Match Point. Sure, both movies star Johansson and are based in London, but I think this is still an unfair comparison as clearly Allen's approach in Match Point was a serious one (without Allen's shtick), whereas Scoop is a comedic one.
I enjoyed this film very much, and (despite what some critics may suggest) feel Scarlet Johannson was not at all uncomfortable in her role, instead splendid in appreance. Also, a great performance by Hugh Jackman (I wish he could have been in more scenes). |
