This is a beautiful movie. It's great when some big names come to a project that is so clearly not what MTV and Pepsi say is what we're supposed to watch. The music is predictably great, with humor and heart. The story is simple Americana. This might put people off if they're used to watching crap that relies on plot gimmicks and heaving bossoms in the last quarter of the flick to keep them from going pee after they drink a 42oz soda. PHC is the best of America, in a time when we're living in a morally tenuous moment as Americans in the world. Unfortunately what we export is bombs and Schwarzenegger, and poor kids who want to find a way to pay for college but end up in a sandstorm on the other side of the world. Movies like this one are not the international face of this country. Still, it's a calm in the storm. If you want to be reminded of the beautiful potential of America, check out this movie and listen to the PHC on NPR every Saturday evening. So I wrote that subject line as a joke, but it's kind of true, only the terrorists have been dimantling this country not with bombs, but with sound bites of panic and red and blue ties. |
