I'll admit that I didn't go see this one at the theatre because I read some just plain awful reviews...however, I rented it today, and am glad to report that this movie is much better than I expected. It is an obvious ripoff of the far superior HOSTEL; but there is at least one scene in this film that really stands out as first rate terror. What I actually liked about this film is that it relied more on suspense than most "beautiful kids in peril" formulas, and that the acting is really decent. So is the direction, surprise, surprise! The first half, in which a group of very goodlooking white tourists get lost, and eventually into a great deal of danger, in Brazil is very well paced, interesting, and quite suspenseful. It's too bad the second half of the film doesn't match the excellent pace of the first half, and things, including the direction, do become a bit muddled,and even very similar to another excellent horror movie from 2006, THE DESCENT, and then finally,more than a little contrived. But it's not a major letdown, only a minor one. All in all, I liked this film, and would recommend it to horror fans. And oh, watch the unrated version if you can. |
