An experiment that turns out to be a success

Soderburgh turned his back on big budget studio films to make this quiet indie flick in the middle of West Virginia. I must warn you, an appreciation of this film requires the viewer to enjoy slow-paced, character-based dramas where little occurs.
It's been said real people bring nothing but boredom to the big screen. In lighter hands this may be true but not with this case. Soderburgh films the action like a documentary. He uses strong character definition and tight editing (the film is a brief 73 minutes). He also got these actors to play practical imitations of their real selves, and to this extent it works.
I look forward to the next experiment Steven Soderburgh has in store. |
