A Toothless Satire

Considering the premise of American Dreamz, which juxtaposes a highly popular reality show, an obvious double for American Idol, with the goings on of a less popular presidency, mirroring the Bush Administration, one would think the promise for a truly biting farce, poised to make a few outrageous statements, at least from present-day Hollywood, would be huge. The producers and writers instead chose to ignore any opportunity, opting instead to go the safe road. After all, it co-stars singing star and so-called actress Mandy Moore, who has box office appeal among a huge demographic, so why risk offending anyone? The result is a farce they had not intended: a toothless satire without any bite at all, a comedy that is astonishingly unfunny.
Moore is Sally Kendoo, the archetypical manipulating backbiter, who will stop at northing to win the televised talent competition. High Grant is Martin Tweed, an obvious parody of Simon Cowell, the egotistical vicious host and creator of the show. Dennis Quaid is President Staton, who on the morning following his victory of winning a second term, reads the newspaper over breakfast for the first time in over four years, and with eyes opened somewhat, begins to have a conscience. And is here where the similarities between reality and fiction end.
Do not believe the favorable reviews from newspaper critics, or even the slightly less enthusiastic users on this board. American Dreamz is a waste of ninety or so minutes of your life you will never get back. |
