I am a Siberian Husky owner. Since that is my area of expertise you will get this review from a dog lovers perspective. I was afraid I would not be able to suspend my disbelief because of the flaws in the story. Not that anyone had mentioned them but people tend to romanticize Huskies and Malamutes. They think of them as fluffy and cuddly and they are, but they alos think they are like other dogs, they are not.
I have to say when they left the dogs behind all I could hear was my Mani-Nana crying when we pull out of the driveway to go with us. Sibe's are pack dogs of the first water and they just don't do well being left behind by part of the pack, especially the Alpha Male. That's when the waterworks started for me.
Set in a gorgeous snowy land this movie is a good family film. Yes, two dogs die and it's very sad, it also shows the deaths kindly and there is no gore. For the record my overly sensative 8 year old son, who cries at Air Bud (not kidding here) did not cry a lot. There were some tears but like I said, he is sensative and adores animals.
I too was not impressed by the human actors, but the dogs were amazing, even more so when you know the rules of Siberian Husky love.
1. Husky's can run for three days without stopping and can run themselves to death (mentioned in the movie, brava).
2. Husky's can run faster than you for three days without stopping.
3. Husky's have no homing instinct whatsoever.
4. They will be sad when you leave but happily take up with a new pack. There is limited loyalty. It's not personal, they love everyone as much as they love you.
Some of the husky action was not realistic. Most husky's, there are some out there that will but not many, will NOT fetch. It's beneath them and they know it.
They also tend not to come back if they get off lead. That's why they had to tighten the collars, in case anyone is wondering.
The running and working hearts of these dogs was brought out well and I was pleased with that. The love between handler and husky was also brought out well.
The only concern I have is that people will see this movie and think a husky is a great pet. You better know dogs and love exercise if you are going to bring one of these fluff balls into your life.
All in all it was a good portrayal of these special dogs. |
