I'm really glad Queen Latifah went into acting. I was never fond of her music, but she's yet to do a flick I haven't licked. This one here isn't anything terribly groundbreaking (and if there's never been a movie done under this premise before, there have certainly been sitcom episodes that have...), but it's well written, well directed, and very well acted.
Latifah's character is witty, charming, has her trademark sassiness, and just well-developed. The movie itself is a little cheesy at times, but it works to actually make the flick more endearing, oddly enough. The surrounding cast performs admirably, and most of the jokes go off really well. It's not an Oscar winner by any means, but you'll have some laughs and won't leave the theatre feeling as though you've just been ripped off of 20 bucks.
This movie is good for a lot of occasions. It's a great date movie. If you want a family night out it works for that as well, though the comedy would largely be over the heads of pre-teen kids. You won't leave feeling nauseaus like with "Hostel", and your in-laws won't walk out with you thinking you're some kind of freak if you recommend it. |
