Reading some of the critic's reviews, this seems to be one of those "love it or hate it" movies. Having read some of the more scathing comments, I think it is fair to say thay some of these critics must have missed the fact, clearly laid out at the beginning AND the end that this movie is based on a true story! There is a certain restriction when you try to portay an actual event, you are stuck with a certain reality and it may not make the most wild action triller. If you try to alter it to fit a more acceptable Hollywood format, well, then its no longer "based on a true story" is it.
Roger Ebert got it right I think, he gave it a "B" so do I. He wrote "This movie by its nature is not thrilling, but it is very genuinely interesting, and that is rare." I think that's a great thing to say about a movie, especially this one. There are some really great roles in this film and one is Vin Diesel's portrayal of the mobster "Jackie D." Vin will never win an Oscar but I think this movie will remain as one of his very best acting performances. This part is simply tailor-made for him, it fits him like a glove. Vin usually plays more or less a caricature of a real person and so is the mobster "Jackie D" so it works very well. Peter Dinklage is simply excellent as the chief defence attorny and Ron Silver gives one of his best and strongest performances as the judge.
