This low budget character study of a troubled inner city teacher and his observant 13-year-old pupil may go on a bit too long, but it does not make any other misstep as it depicts their attempts to help each other. Ryan Gosling is alternately charming and frustratingly self-destructive as the young history teacher. His naturalistic performance is matched frame-by-frame by Shareeka Epps as the young, knowing black student looking for someone to latch onto.
There are numerous telling moments in this tale that should haunt you long after it is over. All of the performances are good, and the writing and direction indicate that someone has lived with this material for sometime before commiting it to film.
Nothing upbeat here, but it does serve notice that there are still a few people out there know how to make a film worth seeing.
Not for the Beerfest or Brittany Spears crowd. |
