Half Nelson is a story of a White, young school teacher who struggles to make a difference in the lives of the inner-city students he teaches, while struggling with his own demons in the form of drug addiction and low self-esteem. A unique, and almost unnerving bond forms between the teacher and one student in particular-- a young African American girl who relates to him on levels that no one else in his life seems to be able. A neighborhood drug dealer who acts as a brotherly, yet dangerous figure to the young girl, is also the teacher's drug supplier. While he fights to save his young student from the influence of the drug dealer, she in turn fights to save him from a more life threatening force-- himself. |
