Fragmented and slow, but great performances

I really wanted to love this movie and instead I just thought it was good. The parallels b/w Gossling's teaching life and personal life were done well, showing how he certainly didn't practice what he preached. It's almost like teaching was therapy for him to say things out loud--simple little phrases on how to live life--that he himself couldn't follow. But despite the great performances and intriguing subject matter, the movie was very fragmented--especially the first hour. Very quick, abrubt scenes that didn't tie together come at you. Now if this was done to mirror Gossling's screwed up life, then job well done. But as a moviegoing experience, it felt awkward at times. |
