Yahoo! decided to censor the following review of "Inland Empire." Luckily, some twit wrote a response to the review (see, "Response to 'Lady, You're Dying') and reprinted the entire review at the bottom of hers. In the spirit of democracy and the freedom of speech, I hereby reinstate getoffamyback's beautiful deconstruction of the "pervert in the pulpit's" jumbled mess, "Inland Empire."

There has been considerable debate as to whether or not David Lynch is a conservative hiding in pervert's clothing. "Inland Empire" confirms that not only is Lynch right of center, he may well be a Nazi.
At the heart of "Inland Empire" is the concern of the extinction of the white race. In order for a particular ethnic group of homosapiens to go by way of the dinosaur, one of several things needs to happen. They can be exterminated in a holocaust or some other horrific disaster, natural or otherwise, or they can be wiped out by their women refusing to engage in the act of procreation. This is of tremendous concern to hardcore right wingers.
David Lynch has always flirted with racist and anti-semitic themes, the most overt being "Mulholland Dr." in which he scapegoats Hollywood Jews for destroying white girls who make the mistake of coming to Hollywood in search of gold. "Inland Empire" picks up exactly where "Mulholland Dr." left off, this time taking the behavior of white women (the film begins with a whore being asked to define the parameters of her existence, the gist being that white women are whores who engage in sex for their own selfish purposes) to its logical extreme. The racist sentiment is cemented as Laura Dern's Hollywood Blvd.-strolling hooker dies in front of an African-American woman, a Japanese woman (whose broken English is played for a long, long laugh) and the Japanese woman's African-American boyfriend. The African-American woman gently explains to Dern, "You're dying woman." The message, just as the tag-line on the movie poster suggests ("A Woman In Trouble"), is directed to all white women.
Race politics aside, this is the messiest, least organized of all of Lynch's films. It makes "Lost Highway" and "Mulholland Dr." look like Spielberg movies (which is appropriate since Lynch, ultimately, desires a reconstruction of the nuclear family just as much as Spielberg does.) The digitial medium does Lynch no favors. The lighting is often terrible and the constant use of hand-held shots makes it look like a student film. I left the theater with the impression that Lynch had shot a whole lot of footage and slapped it together in the editing room and prayed to God a bunch of pseudo-intellectuals would a.) overlook his racist agenda and b.) contrive their own hoaky meaning to the whole mess.
In the end, it is Lynch out of control. I'm sure on subsequent viewings the film might make more sense, but I'm also sure that would just be my brain straining to find logic where there is none. |
