I don't agree with the allegory-for-white-survival view of this movie, if only because the depth of interpretation required for that reading is deeper than this movie. The xenophobia is broader: polish men are creepy! old people are scary! japanese people speak funny! jeremy irons has weird teeth!
I think the biggest problem with Lynch is his sociopathic inability to identify with his characters, which is probably what some see as deep since it is Godard-esque in this way. His films are hollywood to the core in that anything outside of blond, white and firmly chinned is oooh, scary. In this sense Lynch does show us white America, which I think in the main is too emotionally lost and unaware to even conceptualize a solid supremacism.
The reason I'm not as against the Dern death scene with the black folks is at least Lynch has finally cast some! They come off quite normal, if homeless; compare to Wild at Heart where they are murdered.
Anyway, I'm amazed at the depth people find in this. People are art-starved it seems. I do credit a certain facility for filmic tropes, as the pointless parade of entrances and exits make for a credible visual rhythm. But Lynch is lost in his all-American narcissism, which in truth is bad news for the US because he certainly possesses prodigious gifts as a image-maker. Maybe if he suffered a sixteenth as much as his hapless characters we'd end up with a real master.
PS: yes Dern is great. All the actors are. Too bad the movie isn't about that. |
