Since when can Hollywood legally film children simulating sex acts? I was looking forward to this film after watching Inarritu's 21 Grams. But, 10 minutes into the movie my enthusiasm for this movie was killed when a 10-year old boy pulled his pants down and begins masturbating after watching his teenage sister undress. More shocking was that this scene lasted for about 30 seconds. (Thus, the "F" for acting, direction and visuals.)
I should have done the decent thing and left with the other handful of people that walked out of the theater at that point. But, I stayed to the end and remained disappointed.
A few comments about the plot:
First, in my opinion, the film is essentially two films--(1) a story about a Japanese father and his daughter and (2) a story about the connection between the rest of the characters in the film (i.e. a far inferior version of Crash). The connection revealed near the end of the movie between story #1 and story #2 is lame because it does not create any emotional connection between the two groups. (Was it supposed to?)
Second, the ending was very unsatisfying because there really was none. It would be equivalent to watching Rudy finally being able to suit up for the final game of the year...and then roll the credits. Frodo destroys the ring in Mount Doom...and then roll the credits. The Titanic crew finds Rose floating in the water...and then roll the credits. Some films end well and some don't, but this one didn't seem to do either.
I am sorry to say I watched this movie not only because the plot and ending was disappointing but because this movie crossed my moral limits. |
