Not even 1/2 as violent as you think it will be...

I went into Hostel expecting to squirm and be "shocked" by something I hadn't seen before in an American movie theater.
It didn't happen.
Sure, there's a lot of violence, and one extremely disturbing image that will probably stick in my head for awhile (it happens towards the end), but I squirmed A LOT more during Saw and Saw II. That's a fact. This film is weak compared to the Saw series - also by Lions Gate.
In Saw II, when the guy goes into his own eye socket to pull out the key...I squirmed a lot more watching that than I did during Hostel, save that one seen at the end, which was very much over the top - it reminded me of Kill Bill when Uma is fighitng the 100+ dudes and heads are spewing like geyers...the director definately tried to hard on that scene.
There's a ton of nudity in Hostel. I haven't sat in a movie theater surrounded by guys (and surprisingly a lot of women) and watched a lot of sex like that before. It was a little bit weird. I'm glad there was a seat in-between me and the next two dudes. ha.
Bottom line: you will come out of the theater thinking and saying what me and other people were saying as we left the theater: "that was WEAK".
Let's face it - you're not going to see Hostel to see a great movie, with superior acting and excellent plot. You're going because you want to squirm and see crazy violence.
Don't waste $9, when you can rent SAW for $4.25 at Blockbuster.
"Hostel" - 2 stars out of 4. - and that's being generous. |
