Interesting story. The subject hasn't exactly been overdone---Midwestern life;Norwegian/ German/ Polish immigration. Kitchen Stories and
The Straight Story come to mind. Yet by lingering a little too long on the faces of the two principals, the camera, aided by a script that never shows us the capitulation of Olaf's acceptance and blossoming love for Inge, asks for more subtle facially-delivered emotion than the actors are able to deliver. Guinee never gets beyond that lunkheaded Norwegian intractability, except briefly at the end. Reaser, while good, needs to strongly channel her Meryl Streep-ness to make this story stick. The Ned Beatty character seemed the most dynamically realized. Glad I saw it (it just opened in my area today. Why so late?), but it needed better editing.
