The importance of casting...

To this Minnesotan of German, Scandinavian, and French stock, the movie was both moving and irritating. The two main actors are beautifully and believably cast--well, maybe a little too beautiful, but this is the movies--and have a lovely, sexy chemistry. But Alan Cumming as a Norwegian??? I know he is credited as a co-producer, but his accent is all over the place and I just didn't buy it. I LOVE Alan Cumming, but not in this movie. Ditto John Hurt. There is a distinctive Scandinavian-inflected accent around here. We have it now, and they certainly had it in the 1920s. I heard a couple of very old ladies complaining about innaccuracies in the farming/thrashing equipment they showed as well, but I wouldn't know anything about that. Anyway, the movie is beautiful, sweet, sentimental and it made me cry, but it also made me shake my head. Casting is SOOO important... |
