This is a gentle and mesmerizing movie experience that moves you emotionally in a very hard-to-describe way. It is not meant to be an action flick or anything else other than a light romantic comedy (but not uproarously so). My wife and I enjoyed and discussed this movie at length so it is especially recommended to couples. It's nostalgic look at ordinary farm community life circa 1920 is poignant in that it naturally draws a comparison between the way things used to be and how they are now. In many ways, today's convenient and techno lifestyle doesn't hold up well against the movie's portrayal of that slower-paced world and I think from that comes the unfamiliar emotional response that I felt. Yes, the people of that day seemed backward and even mean-spirited at times, but many of the community-based values that people once held seem lost forever. Another message I took from the film was that life was hard and many people struggled to eke out a living...tough conditions which brought these two people together and created fertile ground for true love to grow. The acting is extremely sublime and well done. Thanks to Will Weaver for writing something so incredibly thoughtful and human. The direction is superb and the camera work and beautful wide-open prairie scenics are breathtaking. There are not enough movies like this... reminicent of how Hollywood used to entertain us. The movie is a simple one... but simply wonderful in its effect. |
