Be warned that this film is graphic, gritty and very realistic in its nature. And Maggie Gyllenhaal really "exposes" us to a new side of her...up one side and down the other, in fact. This is an acting breaththrough for her; it's a legitimate kickstart to a longlasting career for her. Too bad she didn't get an Oscar nod; she should have. Sherry (Maggie) has just been let out on probation from prison and she wants so much to be the one to take care of her little girl, who has been staying with her pu**ywhipped brother and his domineering wife, who eventually coaxes the confused little girl not to call Sherry "Mommy", but...Sherry. Sherry f**ks up a lot, by her own admission, and she does it right before our very eyes throughout the film, demonstrating a very uneven emotional keel, a penchance for primal sex, and she even manages to drink, snort coke, shoot heroin, and chain smoke all while attending a 12 step program. It's hard to root for her character, but you end up doing just that. And this is why Maggie G is great in this movie. She manages to take a very unlikable character and have us rooting for her. Good Job, Mag! |
