First off, let me clarify something to all the reviewers who bashed this movie: if what you were looking for was a laugh-a-minute comedy movie, then you came to the wrong place. Look at the title of this movie: "Dave Chappelle's BLOCK PARTY". It's one big block party. No scripts, no rehearsing (except for the artists, and even so....), none of that. It's just a whole bunch of people that Chappelle snatched up and brought to New York so they could all have a good time. That's all it is: a "feel-good" movie. You want Oscars stuff? Go watch "Brokeback Mountain".
Now, onto the actual review. I would like to personally thank Dave Chappelle for illuminating the roots of hip-hop here. This is what hip-hop is really about: smooth beats that you can groove to, combined with lyrics that actually have substance to them. There's no "bling-bling" to be seen here. There's no gang-banging anywhere in this. We rarely get that anymore, and the artists who still live by this style of rapping get knocked out of the spotlight by all the mainstream stuff.
Oh yeah, and Dave is just as crazy as he's always been. He clowns around with all the people he meets, he's cool with all the artists who perform.....he's just there to have a good time, and to make sure everybody else does too. There's nothing more to really say about this movie besides this: It's not for everybody, but if you do go see it, understand that you're not walking into a standard comedy movie.....you're walking into a widescale party. |
