I had a chance to see this movie in NY a couple of weeks ago and was hesitant about seeing it. My expectations were low since I had no idea what it was about and my friend's description didn't make sense, but I ended up loving this movie! Aside from the story, which in telling it would kill the fun of the ride, the movie does a lot of things that aren't typical. Rather than being set in some generic college populated by equally generic characters this movie takes place in a very natural setting and a very secluded world. Rather than choose style over substance, the movie and the cinematography lets the bizarre plot stand out by not taking away from it with nauseatingly jumpy shots.
I expected to roll my eyes, but ended up laughing through most of it. Most of the cast is great; especially Rebecca Mozo who has a real presence even if it doesn't get completely reflected in the small role. She felt like a real female, not some weird concoction by a frustrated guy. Alison Folland and Dustin Seavy are great as the best friends and Gina Bellman is wonderful as usual (I had no idea she was in this). I liked Taylor, I liked his character, but I definitely gravitated towards the other characters in the film.
The best part, and this is where it should get major props, is telling a story about sexuality and sexual attraction in a way that is original and surprisingly true to life, despite the circumstances of the characters involved.
They should add a subtitle "The Little Movie That Could." |
