I saw the world premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. The director clearly loved this movie and his cast. The movie tells the true story of a basketball coach who took on the girl's basketball team after someone else was given the boy's team. It is set in the 60's and accurately captures the second rate status of girls basketball compared to the boys. The coach inspires the girls and they win the state championship. The girls and the coaches wife help him learn how to coach them.
The movie is at times sentimental but appropriately so for the times. It brought tears to my eyes on more than one occaision even though the story follows the well trodden path of the underdog sports team that triumps. The acting is superb by the coach and his wife - they are people we identify with. It really feels like the girls are playing basketball and are not just acting. All in all a great movie. Worth seeing. |
