The Departed is "based" on the superb Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, and I put based in quotes because Scorsese completely mangles the story into a mess. The crux of the story (at least in the Hong Kong version) is the redemption of the Colin Sullivan/Matt Damon character. His character slowly realizes that he wants a regular life - that's the whole point of the story - without it, there's no character development, and the ending makes no sense. And it doesn't in The Departed, with all the random shootings at the end. It's like Superman without Clark Kent - or Star Wars without Anakin. The worst part was his face-off with his boss, Costello. The scene in the HK version was brilliant - here, it made no sense at all. What's all this about a "son he never had?" The Departed has grossly departed from Infernal Affairs. I do have to say that although Jack Nicholson was his masterful self, do yourself a favor - watch the original! |
