A change from typical hollywood

Oh the tension, oh the thrill.

This movie has everything that an audience member could ask for from a film. What will attract and more importantly satisfy movie-goers is the refreshing change that the storyline takes from your typical car-racing, sex-selling, drug-dealing cop movie. This movie focuses on the psychology and challenges of people trapped inside the game of life and death.

Now, the Asian community feels some resentment toward the fact that this is a remake of the 2002 thriller "Infernal Affairs." Or as the director stresses, "based on" it. Having viewed both films, many will agree that most of the critical scenes are almost identical. The fact that they added a sex scene and picked a different location does not change ANYTHING. This is a remake in every way. It comes close to being a clone.

Andy Lau (who plays Matt Damon's character in the original) has already commented positively on this film, giving it an 8 out of 10. And as a film studies major, I find myself agreeing with this rating. Leonardo DeCaprio, Matt Damon, and Mark Walberg are but few of the many great talents found in The Departed. But none will live up to the breathtaking, indescribably outstanding performances of Andy Lau and Tony Leung in Infernal Affairs.

Like some people out there, I begin to question...Has Hollywood lost its creativity? The Departed is but one of many remakes of Asian movies, including The Ring, The Grudge, The Lake House, and so forth. What is further fascinating is how much money and time it takes Hollywood to remake what the Asians have accomplished for so much less. Apparently, Infernal Affairs was filmed in 12 days on a 6 million US dollar budget.
