The Departed is based on a 2002 movie from Hong Kong called 'Infernal Affairs'. Subsequently, Infernal Affairs II and III came out in 2003 to complete the trilogy. I am judging The Departed on its own merit, and I think it is good, especially the performance of Jack Nicholson, and that it is one of the better remakes out there. But I still think the original edges it. The Departed tries to compress all three of the original Trilogy (even though it has only paid the rights for the first one) into one movie, as a result, it lacks some of the suspense of the original. Also, it does't have the philosophical depth of the original (which illustrates the lack of polar identities of the two protagonists as a 'suffering' in a purgatory hell), and instead, it embodies itself in superficial hollywood style thrills. Scorsese's previous 'Goodfellas' and 'Casino' definitely best this one. For filmgoers, go rent the original and judge it for yourself. |
