An excellent opportunity lost

I went into the film expecting a challenging and thought-provoking story. I was very pleased with the acting of the principals Robin Williams and Toni Collette. Their scenes together were amazing and Toni Collette was so convincing in her protrayal of a woman who seems out-of-control but able to control those around her. The mood was suspenceful but lacked weight as the film moved along. There is some confusion caused by direction which ultimately let the actors down because of a trying to be too clever with the story. The ending seemed abrupt and left me unsatisfied. I didn't expect things to be tied up in a nice little box, but the ending left me feeling as though the director said ok we only have so much time to film left, we'll have a "surprise" ending and roll credits. The film is somewhat like a great dinner (the acting of the leads) served on scratched and chipped china. An excellent opportunity lost.
