This film is a pretentious bore. Robin Williams blundered badly in trying to breathe some life into this thin absurd script. The airline attendant states the theme as the hunky gay coos to Williams character: "Thanks for all you have done for us". That's about all there is to know about the "gay with a big heart" message of "The Night Listener". Hang-dog Williams kills off any chance of our sympathy in the first few minutes of the film. Then the story unravels like a cheap sweater of purile guesses.
Shot in textbook Hitchcock style it's deliberately poorly lit with all the usual visuals; tilted stairs; hazy windows; odd and disturbing stares; threatening dogs; & blonde wigs and sunglasses!
But it is not even faintly engaging or interesting on any level, and we struggled to stay to the end.
Give it a miss: if you want creepy Robin W. watch Insomnia (4/5 stars); otherwise see any Hitchcock film.
